Synopsis

In this section you'll find a complete run-down of the movie's action from start to finish.

We've split the movie into the nineteen chapters listed at the bottom of this page. The later segments are more detailed simply because there's more happening in the movie as things come to a head. Obviously, there are MAJOR spoilers contained within, e.g. who gets killed/who doesn't and, obviously, what happens at the end. So if you haven't yet seen the film and don't want it spoiled, don't read on.

Beginning

The movie opens with the death of Fr. Carlton, an elderly Catholic priest, in a Catholic mission somewhere in Los Angeles. He dies in bed holding a small metal chest.

Fr. Loomis reads the old priest's diary
Fr. Loomis reads the diary left behind by the elderly priest at St. Godard's
The following morning, after Fr. Carlton is found, another priest at the mission, Fr. Loomis, is shown the chest and a diary that was found by Fr. Carlton's bedside. "Why was he here?", Fr. Loomis asks the nun who found Fr. Carlton. He is told that the elderly priest had an appointment with the Cardinal that afternoon.

Loomis is puzzled as Fr. Carlton was a reculse who had rarely strayed outside the confines of his church. On reading the old priest's diary Loomis learns that Fr. Carlton was the last surviving member of a secret sect within the Catholic Church, called the Brotherhood of Sleep. The Brotherhood's role was to watch over a deadly secret which is located in the basement of Fr. Carlton's church, St. Godard's, in downtown Los Angeles. The diary contains some unsettling information and towards the end mentions that "the sleeper awakens".

On opening the chest which was found with Fr. Carlton, Fr. Loomis discovers that it contains a large key. A growing sense of unease comes over the priest and he decides to visit St. Godard's to investigate further.
